Training for Economic Upliftment – Burani Centre
Burani is the second village selected for training in the Economic Upliftment programme. Burani village is situated in Mlafyeni Sub-location, Mwaluphamba location,Kubo Division in Kwale District. It is located at approximately 25 km to the south of Kwale along Kwale- Tiribe road. Its population is estimated to be 10,000 people whose main economic activity is farming. Their cash crops include cashew nuts while subsistence crops are maize, cassava, citrus fruits and the like. They also have small businesses. The unemployment illiteracy levels are nearly 85%. BMMK embarked on training for Business Management / Savings Mobilization and Leadership skills to Bilal Muslim Women Group of Burani Centre on 18th February – 29th February 2008. The training was conducted by a Community trainer, who has been working with Women Groups and has been extensively involved as a Trainer in mobilizing groups to initiate income generating activities. Prior to undertaking Income generating programmes, BMMK commences with group formation, training and Savings club mobilization. Thereafter group funds be provided for Group or Individual income generating ventures.

The training took ten days in total. There were 64 participants in attendance. They formed SUQAINA WOMEN GROUP. In the first four days of training, Business Management training was conducted. At the end of the lesson most of the participants were able to analyse their businesses. Savings mobilization followed, at the end of which they managed to collect their savings.
Leadership training was also conducted. The purposes for this training was to impart Leadership Skills to the participants so as to enable them improve their businesses. Achievements:
1. Participants have been able to open a bank account with K-REP bank to deposit their savings. 2. Some have started small businesses 3. Participants have been empowered on how to maximise profit using their small businesses 4. The group is now informed of how to analyse and do profitable business.

One must have proper skills. One should seek advice from the community and importance of group business. One should have ability, experience, motivation and determination. He/she should also understand the resources needed and availability. One should know his customers.
