Samburu Eye Camp 2009 Print E-mail

Image SAMBURU EYE CAMP NOVEMBER 2009
Imagine living in a sightless world, where you can only hear the life around you, being young yet unable to perform simple daily chores that others perform with ease. This is harsh reality for people residing in remote areas like Samburu, where they do not have access to the medical adequate services.

Image On Monday 23rd of November 2009 Bilal Muslim Mission, in conjunction with the Kwale Eye Centre, organized an eye-camp at
Al Imam Mahdi Centre, Samburu.

The eye camp generated a lot of interest amongst the locals and as a result saw the attendance of large numbers of people from all walks of life, the elderly, young adults and even school going children.

Afflictions among the populace ranged from eye infections, short and long sightedness, partial and even total blindness. One hundred and fifty patients were screened and provided with the relevant treatment free of charge.
Of these, 10 patients were referred to Mombasa for eye surgery after the opticians diagnosed them with serious eye problems. There were also 12 students from Samburu Secondary School who were diagnosed and treated.

Once again, with tremendous help from the Almighty, BMMK has managed to restore sight to many under privileged people, and inshallah more will be treated soon.

            SOME OF THE BENEFICIARIES

 Image

30 year old Mbeyu was nearly blind in both eyes and could only discern movement when a hand was waved in right in front of her face. Her sister in-law confessed that Mbeyu’s husband was beginning to have doubts on their marriage. After numerous unsuccessful visits to the village “doctor”, she arrived for what she thought was a routine check up- without having any real hope of success. Luckily, at the camp she was diagnosed and taken for surgery, after the surgery she regained her vision in both her eyes. Now, post surgery, she has not only regained her vision but also her marriage.
