Training for Economic Upliftment Module I Samburu Rural Centre Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya in collaboration with International Development & Relief Foundation (IDRF) has moved to yet another centre to undertake the programme for empowerment to the Local Community and to provide training for Capacity building to the Women groups in the Rural Areas. • Samburu Rural Centre, Kinango District • Estimated Population : 6,000 • Dry Area : frequently encountering problems such food and water shortage • Main occupation: Animal Keeping and small scale businesses. The first module of 5 days was held at Madrasa Mahdy, Samburu from July 20th – 25th, 2009. The sessions on group mobilisation, leadership and savings training were held. | The main objective of this module was • Building-up of qualities and skills to be a good leader • How to solve problems in groups • Good communication skills • How and where to be cost-effective • Maintaining of records in passbooks, register and monitoring forms. • Basic Savings Techniques and Methodologies • Guideline set for the future plans |
| Activities undertaken during the training: • Islamic studies classes conducted by Sister Ummi from BMMK on issues of Inheritance “Mirath” & Waiting Period of a Widow “Idda” • Issues pertaining to group formation, leadership and savings were taught through interactive discussions, role plays, case studies and story telling • Group Officials were elected • Guidelines to setting up of women group constitution was laid • Work Plan was set up |  | Achievements: • The Constitution was formed and rules were laid down. • The group meetings have been schedule for Fridays. • The group has 37 registered Members who have started saving • This training session attracted women from the neighbouring villages. The Second module of Training has been scheduled from August 9th – 14th, 2009. |
